History

The Academic Bookstore’s ambition is to be a quality bookstore in modern time.

The Academic Bookstore has a long-standing commitment to reading and life-long learning. We are, and always have been, passionate about books!

The Academic Bookstore was founded in 1893.

We offer a wide selection of books, magazines, office and stationery supplies. Our staff carefully curates the selection and is always there to help you find the right book for you or the perfect gift for the ones you care about.

Our flagship store the Book House has the widest book selection in the Nordics. It is the go-to spot in Helsinki to explore and get inspired by literature, culture and the architecture and design of Alvar Aalto. The Academic Bookstore moved into the Book House in October 1969. The Book House is located at Keskuskatu 1, in the centrum of Helsinki.

Alvar Aalto has designed this commercial building. The building has been in its original use since that year, when the Academic Bookstore first moved in. There is also a Starbucks café on the ground floor, as well as Café Aalto on the 2nd floor.

The Academic Bookstore is part of the Bonnier Books Group since October 2015. We have stores in five cities: Helsinki, Espoo, Turku, Tampere and Vaasa. Our stores are considered as meeting places for book lovers.
